FAQs
When you’re a parent, there is a lot to think about when it comes to your child’s health. Here are some of the questions we often get asked:
When should my child start having eye tests? Children should be having yearly eye tests by the age of 3. Although young children often don’t complain about their sight, there can be behavioural signs that indicate vision problems – our optometrist is able to discuss these with you and let you know what to watch out for.
How much will it cost for my child to have an eye test? Children aged 16 and under, or aged 16-18 in full time education, are entitled to FREE eye tests on the NHS.
Can my child’s vision be corrected at such a young age? Up until approximately age 8, children’s eyes have a certain degree of malleability. Beyond this age, problems start to become harder to correct. We stock frames for children as young as 3 months, to give us the best possible chance of improving your child’s vision if there is a serious concern.
Does my child need to be able to read to have a sight test? No! We have tests specifically designed for young children or those with difficulty reading.
It is important that your child’s eye development is monitored through regular sight tests, but it is particularly important if there is a history of eye problems in your family. Call us or book an appointment if you want to discuss your child’s eye health.
